Barghast!
Technically, barghasts aren’t fairies. They’re fey — from the same realms and worlds — but even as our dogs and cats aren’t strictly speaking citizens of our countries, barghasts are neither beholden to nor protected by the courts of the fairies.
This isn’t to say that barghasts aren’t a part of fairy society, however. Certain enterprising (or powerful) fairies keep and breed barghasts as pets, guards or hunting animals. And, over the centuries, many diverse breeds of barghast have been identified. The traditional wolfhound is well known, but hardly the only breed. Rottweilers and German shephards are well known, and a number of terrier-like barghasts have been bred as ratters, more or less.
The defining characteristic, of course, is the tremendous size. There are no ‘toy’ barghasts. And even a chihuahua barghast is over thirty feet long. And if you don’t think a thirty foot long chihuahua is terrifying, you haven’t thought such a thing through, yet.
